Liverpool look set to secure the signature of Jeremie Frimpong, with a £29.5million move from Bayer Leverkusen nearing its conclusion. The club is understood to have triggered his release clause as Arne Slot moves swiftly to identify a long-term successor to Trent Alexander-Arnold.
Reports on Monday suggested Frimpong has already undergone a medical and agreed a five-year contract. But speaking after his side’s 3-2 loss to Brighton, Slot remained tight-lipped on the matter.
Asked directly whether Frimpong had completed his medical, Slot said, “What do you think? I think what we all know is the moment we announce it, that is the moment to talk about it in general. We haven’t announced anything so no need to talk about anyone.”
Trent Alexander-Arnold was again an unused substitute, having been jeered by sections of the Liverpool support during the recent clash against Arsenal. With questions swirling about his future and form, it was Conor Bradley who stepped up, providing the assist for Liverpool’s opening goal.
Despite Bradley’s contribution, the Reds fell to their third consecutive match without a win since lifting the Premier League title, an unfamiliar slump in form that adds a layer of urgency to Slot’s summer plans.
There were minutes for Harvey Elliott and Federico Chiesa on the south coast, with Virgil van Dijk granted a rare night off. Slot, who has had ten months with his squad, said, “I know these players already for 10 months, so it’s not the first time I’m judging them.”
He added, “But it’s nice to see Harvey score a goal. He had an assist, not the most difficult one, great goal by Dominik Szoboszlai and Federic had a few good moments as well, especially if you take into account how long he’s not been playing.”
With Frimpong’s arrival seemingly imminent and questions looming over Alexander-Arnold’s future, Arne Slot’s Liverpool rebuild is moving into a decisive phase. The club’s transfer activity and tactical resets could define the early months of his reign.
