The Americans had two things to celebrate at Red Bull Arena, as the legendary 1999 USWNT was honoured before kickoff.
A new generation, meanwhile, dominated the pitch against Mexico with 17 shots and 71% possession, but it took over an hour for Emma Hayesā side to finally crack the visitors.

Rose Lavelle and Lindsey Horan controlled the midfield, while Trinity Rodman and Mallory Swanswon operated on the wings. The new manager continued to tweak what works ahead of Paris 2024.
A rejuvenated side, the USA notably registered more shots on target (three) in the opening four minutes against today than they did when they lost to Mexico in the W Gold Cup earlier this year.
Their persistence eventually prevailed when a team move created by the names above handed the ball to Sophia Smith. She then curled the ball into the far right corner for her 20th goal in 49 games.
Mexico will feel hard done by, having kept the Americans highly frustrated for over an hour and during the final moments of the game in their backyard.
The United States are in Group B and the Olympics, alongside Australia, Germany and Zambia. Up next is a friendly against Costa Rica on Tuesday.
