What’s the word?

Southampton confirmed on their official website that the 19-year-old has signed for the Swiss Super League side on a permanent deal after three years with the south coast club.

He made just three first-team appearances during his time with the Saints but was touted for a big future at the club, with the likes of Barcelona being linked with him in the past.

A summer move was perhaps always likely to be on the cards after the teenage midfielder handed in a transfer request during the January transfer window, although a report from The Athletic at the time claimed that Southampton were not keen to let the highly-rated youngster depart.

Will Southampton regret letting him go?

Dan Sheldon, who covers Southampton for The Athletic, named Jankewitz as his player to watch in 2021 and dubbed him “technically very good“. However, he wasn’t afforded any further opportunities by Ralph Hasenhuttl after he got himself sent off two minutes into his full Premier League debut in the 9-0 defeat against Manchester United back in February.

That would be his last appearance for the club, with his previous two coming in a 2-0 win against Shrewsbury Town in the FA Cup and as a late substitute in a 1-0 defeat against Aston Villa.

Jankewitz clearly felt that he was ready for first-team football at Southampton but was always likely to struggle to get into Hasenhuttl’s midfield ahead of the likes of James Ward-Prowse, Oriol Romeu and Stuart Armstrong, so it was no surprise to see him omitted entirely after his disastrous cameo at Old Trafford.

That being said, his performances for Switzerland at the European Under-21 Championship earlier this year, particularly in a 1-0 win against England, suggest that he has a lot of talent; and Southampton may well not regret giving him more opportunities if he is able to prove himself at Young Boys and make a name for himself in the future.
