Southampton: Carrillo’s value has plummeted since leaving | OneFootball

Southampton have made a name for themselves out of selling players for large sums of money over the past decade or so. They have been able to sell the likes of Adam Lallana, Danny Ings, Virgil van Dijk, Morgan Schneiderlin, Luke Shaw and Sadio Mane for £26m or more.

For all of their transfer successes, though, there are also pieces of business the club would rather not look back on. Players come and go from football clubs all the time and you are unlikely to strike gold with every move, meaning that there is a list of signings Southampton fans wince at when they think back to them.

The signing of Guido Carrillo almost certainly falls into that category. Mauricio Pellegrino brought the Argentine striker to the club from AS Monaco in January 2018 for £19.80m. He played ten matches between January and May, seven times in the Premier League, and scored zero goals. It was a disastrous signing and he was never seen in a Saints shirt again.

Leganes signed him on loan for the 2018/19 and 2019/20 campaigns, with the forward scoring seven times in 58 league matches for the club in that time. Southampton then decided to chop up his contract early in order to allow him to join La Liga side Elche on a free transfer.

At the time of his move to Elche, Transfermarkt valued him at £4.32m. This was already down from the £5.40m valuation he had upon his arrival at Southampton from Monaco, but the worst was yet to come for the former Saints man.

As of today (13/09/2021), Carrillo’s market value on Transfermakt stands at a measly £1.80m. This has plummeted 58.3% since his exit from St. Mary’s, showing that his decline was not limited to being at Southampton, as he has continued to struggle as a player in Spain.

In the 2020/21 La Liga season, Carrillo netted three goals in 21 games for Elche and has started this term off with zero strikes in three matches. This shows that he has been unable to hit form since his departure from England, which suggests that the Saints were right to cut the cord with him.

The signing of Carrillo was a disaster and his form for the club and since leaving proves this. His value decreasing 58.3% following his move to Elche from the Saints is one part of it, but his goalscoring record leaves plenty to be desired and that initial price tag of £19.80m may well scar supporters for a while to come.
