Southampton is slipping towards a Premier League relegation this season. Certainly, it should concern the Saints, but surprisingly, it will affect the top flight as well.

The saying that the Premier League is the biggest Football League feels incomplete. It's not just the biggest but simply the wealthiest, most influential, and most importantly, the toughest league.

A simple stat illustrates the already peaking competition in the Premier League.

Did you know that the 2023/24 season was unique on its own? For the first time in the Premier League's history, all the newcomers were relegated at the end of the season.

Shockingly, it's the same this season also, with all three, Leicester, Ipswich, and Southampton occupying the relegation spots.

Particularly, Southampton's situation is worse. Though they are not accepting it, the Saints still battle the worst points record ever.

While this eventually brands the English top flight's competitiveness in the world, it might be a problem for them in the long run. This is as per official Tony Scholes' belief.

Southampton's Championship drop would ring alarming bells for Premier League

Recently, Premier League's chief football officer Scholes looked tense witnessing the struggles of promoted clubs. As quoted by Sky Sports, Scholes said: "The quality of this league is just unbelievable. But no, it would not be good for the league if the three who are coming up went back down again year on year."

Will you believe me, when I say this? All this is due to the widening gap between the Premier League and the Championship.

If this wasn't evident with the stark dip in players' performances between the two competitions, this stat should be an alarming call to the officials.

Maybe, a faceoff between the bottom Premier League sides and Championship table toppers would work. That way, the top flight will boast its authority while maintaining a level playing field for all.

What do you think, will Southampton enjoy its top-flight status in this proposed system?
