Real Madrid defender Raul Asencio has been the standout inclusion in the Spain squad for the UEFA Nations League quarter-final double-header against the Netherlands later this month.

The 22-year-old academy graduate’s first national-team selection, announced earlier today, marks a significant milestone in his career.

Praise from Luis de la Fuente

Spain manager Luis de la Fuente addressed Asencio’s call-up during a press conference, praising the defender’s rapid progression in his breakthrough season at Real Madrid.

“Raul is having a great season. He had already played in the lower categories, but not at U21 level. His case is that of a player who accelerates the process,” said De la Fuente, as quoted by Mundo Deportivo.

Continuing, the Spain head coach added: “He shows his talent and proves that he has a place, that if he has an opportunity in professional football he takes it and we celebrate this. He is one more player who joins this family.”

Exceptional progression

Asencio made his first-team debut for Real Madrid in November 2024, in a La Liga game against CA Osasuna and has not looked back since.

The 22-year-old La Fabrica product has already accumulated 29 senior appearances, even registering a couple of assists in the process.

The manner in which he has adapted to the demands of first-team football at the club has left the backroom staff amazed.

Speaking at his press conference earlier today, Real Madrid manager Carlo Ancelotti praised Asencio following his Spain call-up, saying:

“We have welcomed it. It’s very good news. He deserved it because of his work and his seriousness. He deserves everything.”
