Josep Martinez made a positive impression in his first ever appearance for Inter Milan against Udinese in the Coppa Italia.
This is the view in today’s print edition of Turin-based newspaper Tuttosport, via FCInterNews.
Inter paid a big fee to bring in Martinez from Genoa over the summer.
The Nerazzurri have made it clear that they back the Spaniard to be the player to inherit the starting spot in goal from Yann Sommer in the long term.
But in the more immediate future, Sommer has shown no signs of letting his spot go.
Therefore, prior to yesterday the former Bayern Munich shot-stopper was immovable.
Yesterday, it was finally Martinez’s time to prove his worth at Inter.
Nerazzurri coach Simone Inzaghi entrusted the 26-year-old to start between the post in the team’s first Coppa Italia match of the season.
It was not a match in which Martinez had all that much to do in terms of saves.
But the Spaniard showed his reflexes and long reach to make them convincingly.
Meanwhile, Martinez looked confident in possession.
There was one nervy moment where the Spaniard was perhaps to confident, as the wrong weight on a pass out to Matteo Darmian nearly played Inter into trouble.
But Martinez didn’t let that or any other jitters deter him. He looked right at home not just in his saves, but also in possession.
