Catalan club CF Reus Deportiu drew 1-1 against Córdoba on Saturday, but they may not play another match this season.

A statement released by captain Jesús Olmo on Friday confirmed that every member of the squad has terminated their contracts because the club’s perilous financial situation means they have not been paid for months.

“We have the option of terminating our contracts and we’ve decided to exercise it because we understand that the situation is already unsustainable,” said Olmo.

“We believe there is no other way our rights can be guaranteed. A partial solution would turn the dressing room into something akin to hell on a daily basis, given it would prolong the agony we’ve experienced until now.

“The situation should have been solved on October 26, but the club didn’t fulfil what they promised us.

“The problem has gone on until today. We believe there is no way out and we’ve reached our limits after so many unfulfilled promises and seeing how some of the lads are experiencing situations that are unacceptable for professionals.”

Reus were promoted to the Segunda División for the first time ever in 2016 and have remained there ever since.

Saturday’s draw at home to Córdoba lifted them up to 19th in the table but with no players available to fulfil their remaining fixtures, there is a strong chance they may be forced to forfeit the rest of the season and could go out of business altogether.

They have until Monday night to find a new buyer or significant investment in the club, and Barcelona defender Gerard Piqué recently denied rumours he was interested in purchasing the club.

Meanwhile, LaLiga chief Javier Tebas has offered his support to the players’ plight.

“They’re the victims of a problem caused by Reus themselves,” he said.
