On Sunday evening, there was Belgian Pro League action for Tottenham Hotspur loanee Alfie Devine and his KVC Westerlo side, as they faced Royal Antwerp and former Spurs defender Toby Alderweireld. Unfortunately, other loanee Luka Vuskovic did not play, after his red card in Westerlo's previous outing last week.
Nevertheless, Devine was, as usual, named in the starting XI, and once again as a number ten. The young midfielder has started every single league game he has been available for since his debut, where even then he came on at half time. Really encouraging stuff.
After a quarter of an hour, Antwerp took the lead, with former Spurs striker Vincent Janssen took the lead. Genuinely crazy to think he was in North London long enough to have played at the Tottenham Hotspur Stadium three times.
Midway through the first half, Westerlo equalised, scoring a rebound after an attempt from Devine was kept out. Then, after 36 minutes - they took the lead, which was enough to give them a 2-1 advantage heading into the second half.
However, 12 minutes into the second half - disaster struck, as Devine put the ball in the back of his own net, and the sides were level again, at 2-2. It looked like that was going to be the final goal of the game.
Unfortunately for Westerlo, it was not. Seven minutes into stoppage time, Antwerp converted a penalty to ensure all three points, and inflict further misery on the Spurs loanee's side. As for Devine himself, he was booked, and played 84 minutes of the game. Despite five shots, he was unable to find the back of the net for consecutive games.
Things are looking pretty grim for Westerlo at the moment. After this defeat, they find themselves 13th in the league, with 23 points from their 22 games so far. This means that they are currently in the relegation round spots, and will need to find their way out by the time the league splits into two later in the season.
Things do not get any easier, either. Next up is a home game against top of the league Genk next Saturday, at 15:00 GMT. The good news is that Vuskovic will have returned from suspension for that game, and will be able to help the team as much as possible. Tough day, tough few weeks for everyone involved.
