FC Barcelona might have failed to see out a deserved win against Atletico Madrid last night but it was a performance with a lot of positives. Hansi Flick will be looking into the good things that his team showed last night.
Of course, the German coach will certainly want to address the slip up and the inability to see the game out but he would be looking at the performances of players like Lamine Yamal, Raphinha and Pedri with immense hope for the future.
Pedri was sublime on the night against Atletico Madrid and in the 85 minutes that he was on the pitch, he absolutely ran the show. He glided around like the ball was glued to his feet and did things that left watchers spell-bound.
In football, it is often easy to be type-casted into a particular role and Pedri has wittingly or unwittingly seen the orchestrator tag stick with him. However, as per Mundo Deportivo, stats show that the 22-year-old is more than just that.
Defensively, Pedri was incredible against Atletico Madrid, recovering 13 balls, which was more than his midfield compatriot Frenkie de Jong who himself recovered an impressive 8 balls. He was also the Barcelona player who won the most tackles (5).
Despite not naturally playing in the wide channels, Pedri still completed 5 crosses on the night, on level with Raphinha who excels at it and one more than the extremely creative and dangerous Lamine Yamal. It showcased how well he drifted into wide spaces and caused an impact.
Of course, the icing on the cake to cap off what was a fantastic display of complete football, Pedri scored his fifth goal of the season, coming into the box and receiving a smart cutback from Jules Kounde to kickstart the proceedings for Barcelona.
With every passing week, Pedri, who has been labeled as an ‘incomparable’ player by Hansi Flick, is further cementing his status as one of the best midfielders in the world, if not the best, and he is more than just an orchestrator. Let’s hope that he continues this rich vein of form for a long time.
