Liverpool’s doubleheader started this week with a visit to the Amex stadium, playing Brighton in their first defence of the Carabao Cup on Wednesday and prevailing 3-2 with a heavily rotated side as Cody Gakpo and Luis Diaz starred.

Only four days later the Reds host Brighton in the League, hoping to apply the pressure on Manchester City after a 2-2 draw against title rivals Arsenal last weekend.

This week Dan spoke to former Brighton centre-back Adam Virgo who played for the club between 2000-2005 and maintains close ties with them.

Adam is now involved in commentary for TNT and his in-depth knowledge of his former club gave The Redmen TV a taste of what Liverpool can expect going into this busy week of football.

Brighton have demonstrated the similar form that solidified them as a top-half club under Robert De Zerbi, also featuring in the Europa League last season for the first time in their 122-year history.

31-year-old manager Fabian Hürzeler has come in and implemented his own free-flowing and attacking style of play, with Brighton up in sixth after 9 games and having only lost once.

Speaking of Hürzeler, Adam believes that he has come in and got the players adopting his style very quickly, evidenced by wins over the likes of Tottenham, Man United, Newcastle and a draw against Arsenal.

He said: “He is a young manager been in the game a long long time. Fabian has come in and had more of a say on who comes in – looks a great balance.

“It has been a strong start for Hürzeler and Brighton, a squad of players that are doing very well.”

Likewise, Liverpool need to be aware of the threat that Brighton have in attack, especially Danny Welbeck who has already scored seven Premier League goals this season.

Along with Welbeck, Brighton has a lot of youngsters coming through such as Enciso, Ferguson and Baleva who have come in and solidified a strong attacking Brighton midfield.

On Brighton’s danger men Adam suggested that “Carlos Baleba has been a gem unearthed.”

On Welbeck, he raised the point that “He has never got a double figure season for goals But with seven goals so early into the season “(Welbeck) is an experienced player who knows where the net is.”

Finally, Adam was sure to mention that Brighton are “no longer a team to underestimate.”

Compared to his playing days when Brighton were in Division 2, he says “Nowadays it’s a regular fixture and a competitive fixture.”

“There is a performance in there that Liverpool will have to be aware of and games against (the likes of) Liverpool’s, Man City’s etc.. suit their style of play.” Dan agreed acknowledging that this was a “daunting double header” for the Reds.

Redmen Reacts

Whilst a rotated Liverpool side got the job done in midweek it, like most games with Brighton, was far from straightforward and Slot will be fully aware of the threat posed by the South Coast – who have given out more than one bloody nose previously – side as they head to Anfield in search of revenge.

That said, at home and in fine form, having seen the facilities defensively of the Seagulls, it’s hard to imagine the visitors will be able to keep the likes of Gakpo, Diaz, Nunez and Salah at bay.
