After a lengthy period of being on the bench, Wojciech Szczesny is now being trusted to be the starting goalkeeper for his FC Barcelona team by Hansi Flick. The German coach has seemingly decided to keep the Pole as his first priority goalie, despite the errors that he has made in the last few games.

These errors show that Szczesny is still getting accustomed to playing at the highest level as he had to spend some months away from the pitch and training facilities as he had retired at the end of the last season.

As Mundo Deportivo has reported, the Polish goalie appeared in an interview with Gazzetta dello Sport, and revealed how he decided to sign for Barcelona after receiving a call from Robert Lewandowski and watching the match between the Blaugranes and Villarreal:

“I saw my destiny… I retired because I couldn’t find a project that excited me, but I felt this was too thrilling an opportunity to turn down. I came without the expectation of playing—I had only been playing golf for two months.”

The Pole also opened up on the differences between Serie A, where he had been playing with Juventus before his retirement, and La Liga:

“Tactically, Italy is a bit ahead, but technically, Spain is much more advanced. There are more goals here; it’s not as organized. It’s up to me to adapt to them, to a style that is very dynamic and beautiful with so many goals.”

“That said, communication on the field is complicated because the defense plays very high… I don’t know which championship is better.”

“The importance of being one goal ahead is lower than in Italy; here, the attacking continues—it’s impressive. The other day, we won 7-1 against Valencia, and all my teammates were celebrating. I was too, but I was also annoyed because I had conceded a goal.”

There is no doubt that Szczesny is a highly talented goalkeeper, who can contribute a lot with his experience and skills. Hopefully, he will be able to get over the mistakes he has been making and prove to be a difference-maker for Barcelona.
