A look at the players looking likely to depart Home Park this season when their relegation from the Championship is confirmed.

Plymouth Argyle have not yet been mathematically relegated from the Championship but that will be confirmed this weekend as the Pilgrims require to win, all results go their way and a minimum 16-goal swing in order to avoid the drop.

As they prepare to welcome Leeds United to Home Park after what has been a much-improved run of performances and results with four victories in their last six matches, the club will be looking ahead to the summer transfer window and the likeliest departures.

Of their potential 18 players involved in the match day squad to face Leeds on the final day of the campaign, there is a good chance that at least eight of those will not play for the club again.

With two players out of contract, four leaving at the end of their respective loan deals and at least a couple of sales likely from Home Park, there is a fair bit of work for the club to do in the next couple of months.

Crucial loanees to depart Plymouth

Former Rangers defender Nikola Katic joined the Pilgrims on loan from Zurich in the winter transfer window and the Bosnia-Herzegovina international has been rock solid at the back for Devon-based outfit but the 28-year-old Bosnia-Herzegovina international is unlikely to return to a third-tier side.

The same can be said for both Darko Gyabi and Muhamed Tijani, too. Gyabi, on loan from Leeds, joined Plymouth in the winter transfer window of 2024 and has made 53 Championship appearances for the club over the last 18 months.

However, the 21-year-old England U21 international is again likely to his future, whether permanently or back out on loan, at a higher level than League One.

Muhamed Tijani joined Plymouth on loan from Slavia Prague last summer and has barely started or even got a kick of the ball but Miron Muslic has begun to trust the 24-year-old more and he has notched twice in his last 212 minutes of Championship football to hint at there being something to work with but the likelihood of the renewal of his loan is very slim.

There is, though, an option to buy in Plymouth’s deal with Slavia Prague and the same can be said for Polish left-back Tymoteusz Puchacz, who signed on loan from Holstein Kiel in January but has made just two appearances in Plymouth’s last five matches.

Michael Obafemi joined the club on loan from Burnley last summer but the Ireland international has had an injury hit career mixed in with some average form that has seen him score just two goals in 29 appearances, of which there have been only 14 starts.

Bali Mumba and Maksym Talovierov’s potential future

Players that have permanent contracts at Plymouth that look set to depart are Jordan Houghton and Mustapha Bundu, who are both coming towards the end of their respective deals at Home Park.

Houghton was signed by Plymouth from Milton Keynes Dons in the summer of 2021 and he has made 132 appearances for the club but seemingly looks set to depart alongside Bundu, who arrived on a two-year contract from Anderlecht in the summer of 2023 and has seemingly been unlocked by Miron Muslic in recent weeks.

Bundu, a winger, managed just three goals in 28 appearances last season but he has hit six goals in his last nine games to make it into double figures in this season’s Championship and perhaps earn himself a move that keeps him in the second-tier.

As for potential sales, Bali Mumba has been one of Plymouth’s best players for a number of seasons now but was linked with a move to Leeds United in January and will be a target for many second-tier clubs at least this summer, whilst Maksym Talovierov is unlikely to have expected to be playing League One football next year with the Ukraine international having impressed at Plymouth and having played European football as recently as this season.

Miron Muslic is also expected to be a manager in demand this summer but if he is convinced enough by the project at Plymouth to stay and try to challenge for League One promotion next season then he will have a lot of squad building work to do.
