What happened

We were gifted perhaps the game of the tournament in Fort Lauderdale as the 10 men of Inter Miami hung on to knock out Toronto in a seven-goal thriller.

Staying in the east, Tigres continued to show why they are currently the hottest Mexican team in the competition, easing past continental champs Pachuca thanks to a goal from star-boy Marcelo Flores off the bench.

As we make our way to the west, Seattle showed a glimpse of their old selves, roaring past the LA Galaxy in an surprise thumping up in the Pacific Northwest. Brian Schmetzer's side found themselves 2-0 up inside seven minutes off of two corner-kicks.

Finally, after shocking us all and making it out of a group with the LA Galaxy and Liga MX giants Chivas, San Jose thumped Necaxa at PayPal Park to keep their tournament alive in stunning style.

Player of the night

There is only one conceivable recipient for player of the night, as Jordi Alba put on a show in Miami's thrilling win over Toronto, providing the assist on all four of the Herons' goals.

He's already a burgeoning star in MLS, and solo goals like this will only help his cause.

What this means

Miami's win means they await the winner of Columbus and Kansas City, potentially setting up a gargantuan clash between two of the best teams in MLS. Meanwhile, Tigres will play the victor of Friday's showdown between New England and NYCFC.

In the West, Seattle move on to square off with Liga MX side Pumas, and San Jose have set up an all-California showdown with LAFC, and they do so in fine fettle.

What comes next

The round-of-32 continues Friday with a full slate of games. Most notably, Club América and Columbus Crew will join the fray after getting automatic passage through to the knockout rounds.
