A self-critical Pep Guardiola has reflected on the struggles that his Manchester City side have faced so far this season.
After winning a record-breaking four Premier League titles in a row, City are now out of this season’s title race and currently lie in sixth place in the table, having just been through their worst run in the last decade.
Guardiola’s side had won just one of the last 13 matches before returning to winning ways against Leicester last weekend. Guardiola will be hoping to earn two wins in a row for the first time since October when City host West Ham this Saturday.
“I am unbelievably honest with myself and I know the reason why we arrive (in this position), the main main reason is me, it is not the players,” he said ahead of the game.
“I should have found something different and it did not happen and that is why we are in this position.
“I lead that group of players and I could not lead them so far, this is the reality.
“I was not able to (get results) for injuries, for many reasons, but even with that I should have found a way to get my results.”
The Catalan admits his own culpability, explaining: “I missed something, I was not doing something well because at the end when you lose a lot of games it is the responsibility of the manager to lead the team.
“All of us, firstly me and after the rest, we know our level. We are not there.
“We were lucky in Leicester. Okay we have got a result but not more than that.
“Hopefully results can help us to have more belief and composure.”
Now that the January transfer window is open, City have the option to look into the market to fill some of the voids left in their squad due to injuries. It seems likely that the champions will have to reinforce this winter and Guardiola said: “We want to try to add players but I don’t know what is going to happen.”
Quizzed on which positions they may target, he responded: “It doesn’t matter we can adjust, I just want the players fit and to get the best level from them.”
It was not all doom and gloom for Guardiola though who was happy to find humour where appropriate. Asked if he shared a special moment with the fans after the last game, Guardiola grinned and replied: “No it happened since I arrived, the people love me so much!”
