Post-match reaction following 1-0 win vs. VfL Bochum

SV Werder Bremen had to wait until shortly before the end of Saturday’s clash with VfL Bochum to finally see their efforts rewarded, as Mitchell Weiser scored to secure all three points. It marked the fourth straight win for the Green-Whites, who were satisfied with the result. WERDER.DE have summed up all the post-match reaction.

Ole Werner, head coach: “It wasn’t our best performance today because we’ve shown recently that we’re capable of playing much better at home. We didn’t manage to avoid making mistakes when in possession. However, we did defend well and didn’t give up many good chances on goal. As the match went on, we started to assume more control and it wasn’t an undeserved win, because we had the better chances.”

Marco Friedl, captain: “The most important thing is that we took home all three points. We knew that it would be a tough game right from the start, and Bochum fought hard for the full 90 minutes. We struggled a bit in attack, especially in the first half, but we defended well. The second half was definitely much better. We knew that we had what it took to pose a threat at any given moment. In the end, we were a bit lucky but all that matters is that we won, so congratulations to the team.”

Mitchell Weiser, match-winner: “We won the game and have also played some good football in recent weeks. I’m a little frustrated that we weren’t able to match those performances today, because that’s what we’re always aiming to do. On the other hand, we also have to give credit to our opponents, who didn’t make it easy for us. It’s a tough game to win, which is why I’m very proud of the team.”

Romano Schmid: “We knew how Bochum play and that it wouldn’t always be pretty. Nevertheless, we didn’t give up many chances and defended well as a team. Once again, we managed to win a close game just like we did earlier this season and it feels great. We’re now three points better off than last season and things are looking really good — the fact that we believe in ourselves as a team can be clearly felt out on the pitch.”

Amos Pieper: “It was never going to be a nice, quiet game against Bochum, given the current state of the table. They were pressing us hard, even when they were a man down and worked hard all game. At some point, they started to tire and we were able to find more space for ourselves. At the minute, we’re good at remaining patient and waiting for our opportunities to come. It might not have been our best performance, but it was a deserved 1-0 win at home.”

Keke Topp: “We were chasing after the ball a lot and didn’t have much possession. The lads left it all out there. It wasn’t an easy came, because Bochum are a tough-tackling side. Our opponents did well considering their position in the bottom of the table.”
