Manchester City are desperate for drive and creativity in their midfield. That has been obvious to see throughout this season. The argument could be made that it is the single biggest priority for the City hierarchy to address this summer. Now it appears that the picture Manchester City are trying to paint with their midfield regeneration has come into view. Three players have now been named as City’s main midfield targets this summer.

Manchester City have three players in mind for their midfield rebuild.

David Ornstein and James Horncastle have reported for the Athletic that Manchester City have an interest in signing Florian Wirtz, Morgan Gibbs-White and Tijjani Reijnders this summer. Furthermore, the Athletic reports state that City’s interest in the trio is independent of each other. Meaning that City aim to sign all three players rather than one or two of them. Ornstein and Horncastle further report that City have made contact with AC Milan over signing Reijnders. Christian Falk reported for CF Bayern Insider yesterday that Florian Wirtz was in Manchester City to meet City officials yesterday.

Wirtz, Reijnders and Gibbs-White would add everything that City need in midfield.

Manchester City are screaming out for creativity and life in midfield. That’s been obvious to see throughout the 24/25 season. Pep Guardiola’s side is currently in the midst of a 10-match unbeaten run. But that has come through controlling games in midfield, rather than playing with enterprise and creativity, as we often see from City at their peak.

But if City were to sign Reijnders, Wirtz and Gibbs-White, that equation would change. All three players would add creativity to City’s midfield. Wirtz would add what City are poised to lose when Kevin De Bruyne departs the club. Reijnders would add drive, goals and immense technical ability to City’s engine room. Gibbs-White would add something similar to Reijnders, but his creativity is something that could be a major weapon for Manchester City. The picture City are attempting to paint does appear to be now coming into view.

To facilitate the arrival of those three players, there will be key players who leave Manchester City this summer. Kevin De Bruyne is already going to be one of those. But if City did sign Wirtz, Reijnders and Gibbs-White, it’s hard to see all of Ilkay Gundogan, Mateo Kovacic and Bernardo Silva remaining at the club. But that will have to happen to cater for a trio of arrivals. Manchester City are yet to complete deals for Wirtz, Reijnders and Gibbs-White. But City’s interest in the trio shows exactly what they’re attempting to add to Pep Guardiola’s squad this summer.
