The Premier League Run-In: When Liverpool Can Secure the Title

No team has ever held a 13-point lead at this stage and failed to lift the trophy.
Liverpool fans have every right to dream. The Reds sit comfortably at the summit of the Premier League, 13 points ahead, following a convincing 2-0 win over Newcastle United. Meanwhile, Arsenal’s goalless draw at Nottingham Forest handed them another setback in the title race.
With just 10 matches remaining, history strongly favours Liverpool. No side has ever squandered such an advantage this late in the season. The momentum is theirs, and their resilience through a gruelling schedule has only reinforced their credentials as champions-elect.
The past few weeks have been a test of character. Five league fixtures in just 15 days—featuring battles with Manchester City, Newcastle, Wolves, Everton, and Aston Villa—could have derailed any side. But Liverpool emerged unbeaten, a testament to their strength and determination.

Despite Liverpool’s dominance, Arsenal are not giving up. They have a game in hand and remain mathematically in the race. However, history suggests their challenge is an uphill one.
The Gunners famously overturned a 13-point deficit to win the title in the 1997/98 season, but that was with 19 matches remaining. This time, they have far fewer opportunities to claw back the deficit. Their challenge is enormous, and the odds are stacked against them.
The March international break and Liverpool’s EFL Cup final mean the Reds will play just one league game next month. That rules out any early confirmation of their title triumph before April.
The earliest possible date for Liverpool to be crowned champions is the weekend of 5/6 April, when they travel to Fulham. For that scenario to unfold, Liverpool must win their next three matches, while Arsenal must lose their next four. Other results, including those involving Manchester City, Nottingham Forest, and Chelsea, would also need to go in Liverpool’s favour.
A more realistic timeline sees Liverpool officially securing the league on 26/27 April, when they host Tottenham. If their lead remains at 13 points, they could lift the trophy in front of their home crowd.
Should the gap narrow to 10 points, the title race could extend into May. A potential title decider looms on 10/11 May, when Liverpool face Arsenal at Anfield. If the Reds are at least seven points clear at that stage, a win or draw would confirm them as champions.
One thing is certain—Liverpool are in the driver’s seat. Their destiny is in their own hands. Keep winning, and the Premier League title will return to Anfield.
