Enzo Maresca has provided an update on the fitness of Romeo Lavia ahead of Chelsea’s game against Copenhagen in the Conference League on Thursday.

The Blues head into the second leg of their last 16 tie against the Danes with a 2-1 advantage from the first leg, thanks to goals from Reece James and Enzo Fernandez.

Chelsea are overwhelming favourites to lift the trophy in May and will fully expect to ease past Copenhagen and into the quarter finals.

Maresca provides Lavia update

The Blues have had a number injuries to key players in recent weeks, with the likes of Nicolas Jackson, Marc Guiu and Noni Madueke all expected back after the international break.

Another player who has been plagued by injury issues since joining the club is Lavia, with the 21-year-old only playing 32 minutes of football last season.

He’s fared better this campaign, but has still been limited to just ten Premier League appearances and 12 in all competitions.

However, Lavia is back in training and was an unused substitute in Sunday’s win against Leciester, but can’t feature against Copenhagen because he’s not been named in the Conference League squad.

Speaking ahead of Thursday night’s game Maresca was asked about the Belgium international and gave an update on his fitness.

“Romeo is much better,” he told his pre-match press conference.

“He is not in the Conference League squad unfortunately. The target is the same as Reece James, to be fit until the end and play as much as he can.”

Lavia has been a big miss, with Paul Merson believing his absence has impacted Chelsea’s performances this season.

The Belgian could be in line to get minutes against Arsenal on Sunday, but it would be a surprise if he started given how careful Chelsea are with bringing players back from injury, especially the likes of Lavia and Reece James.
