Florian Wirtz’s parents opted for two relatively unknown airports for their trip to and from Manchester on Tuesday in an attempt to avoid attracting attention.

Those are the details that have emerged in light of the pair’s short hop over to the City Football Academy on Tuesday morning and into the afternoon as they held a meeting with Etihad Stadium bosses over the future of their son.

Florian Wirtz is believed to be the primary target of Manchester City as they look to replace Kevin De Bruyne, after the club opted not to offer the 33-year-old renewed terms on his expiring contract.

City know that they will face stern competition for the signature of the Germany international, with Bayern Munich believed to be the favoured destination of Wirtz’s father, and Real Madrid not entirely ruled out of the running at this stage.

However, steps were taken this week to intensify their pursuit of the player whilst remaining patient and respectful of the 22-year-old’s pending decision on his next club, with an invite to sit down and hold talks at the City Football Academy this week.

According to the information of BILD, translated and relayed by The Sun, Florian Wirtz, alongside his father Hans and mother Karin, took a private jet at 10AM on Tuesday morning from Maastricht-Aachen Airport in the Netherlands to Blackpool.

The Wirtz family are then said to have been driven directly to Manchester to meet with City officials, before flying back at 4:40PM to the small airport behind the German-Dutch border – chosen to avoid attracting attention.

However, photographers captured photos of Florian Wirtz’s mum and dad at the airport upon their landing in mainland Europe as they returned to their car, bringing the story of what was an attempt at a secret mission to the eyes of the world.

The meeting was also confirmed and detailed by transfer market insider Fabrizio Romano later on Tuesday evening, while further insight into the nature of the relationship between Bayer Leverkusen and Manchester City was provided.

“This trip from the Wirtz family to Manchester is confirmed. It was a meeting with Man City to discuss. Why? Because from Florian Wirtz’s side, they know that Bayer Leverkusen have an excellent relationship with Manchester City,” Romano told his YouTube audience.

“They know Bayer Leverkusen and Man City, from what I’m understanding and hearing, not just have an excellent relationship but would be ready to negotiate an agreement including, eventually, players to go from Man City to Bayer Leverkusen, young players,” he continued.

“For example, a player they love at Bayer Leverkusen is James McAtee – a player who is really highly-rated by Pep Guardiola. But, in case they can do the Florian Wirtz deal, this could be one of the names to discuss and not the only one.

“So the possibility to include players as part of the package, and also to be the long-term relationship, City-Leverkusen, in case they do this Florian Wirtz deal.”
