One player who has recently been named as a potential transfer target for Manchester City is Nottingham Forest midfielder Morgan Gibbs-White. Alex Crook and Robert Calcutt have reported for TalkSport that Nottingham Forest has placed a £100 million price tag on the England international. Now the question becomes if Manchester City have decided that Gibbs-White is the player they want to bolster their midfield is that a price tag they’re willing to pay? That’s an interesting point to ponder ahead of the summer transfer window.

Irrespective of Kevin De Bruyne’s impending departure, Manchester City is desperate for more creativity in midfield. It’s a need they simply must address this summer. Morgan Gibbs-White could potentially fill that need. He is a player who can pick out a pass and City do need that type of midfielder. Gibbs-White is also a player who can drive from midfield with his dribbling ability. Although he isn’t a consistent goal threat the England international does have an eye for goal. Gibbs-White is also homegrown which may also become important this summer. All of the strongest attributes of Gibbs-White’s game could add a new dimension to City’s midfield. The issue is Nottingham Forest’s reported price tag. Is that one that Manchester City would be willing to meet? That appears to be the bigger question.

Manchester City have only paid £100 million for a player once before. That was when they signed Jack Grealish from Aston Villa. Yes, Manchester City spends big on players, but they rarely reach the £100 million figure. Could they do it again to sign Morgan Gibbs-White? It may come down to a situation where needs dictate City’s summer moves. If Nottingham Forest doesn’t budge on that price tag City may look elsewhere to add creativity to their midfield.

Perhaps if Nottingham Forest lowered their asking price for Gibbs-White Manchester City could make their move. Ahad Shaukat has now reported for CaughtOffside that Forest could settle for €70 million to sell the England international. That seems to be a more realistic price for Gibbs-White. If Forest does lower their asking price for Gibbs-White that may see Manchester City make their move. But if they don’t we could see Pep Guardiola’s side look elsewhere to strengthen their midfield.

Given the possibility of Manchester City needing to sign anywhere from four to six players this summer, they may deem £100 million to be too much to sign Morgan Gibbs-White. That’s despite the fact that the Nottingham Forest midfielder is a quality player and could improve City’s engine room. Perhaps there is better value elsewhere in the transfer market that will help City’s bid to strengthen Pep Guardiola’s squad this summer.
