Perhaps the 24/25 season was one that Manchester City had to have. A poor campaign has exposed the holes in Pep Guardiola’s squad. It also proved that an era has ended at the Etihad. But the messaging that has come out of City since the season ended indicates that there is a determination to get back to the high standards that are demanded at the Etihad. In an interview with Chris Bailey on mancity.com, Manchester City chairman Khaldoon Al-Mubarak spoke of the determination of everyone at the club to get back to the top.
Manchester City chairman Khaldoon Al-Mubarak has declared that City will be back next season. He also explained that the 24/25 season is already in the rearview at the club. Speaking with Chris Bailey he said: “We will be back. This season is a season that’s now behind us. Today is a new day. We start working and preparing for next season. And by the way, we’ve been doing that since January. And we will take all the good things and the not-so-good things from this season and learn from it and improve from it and get better. I can assure you, this Club will do everything possible to come back to the standards that we know we all can achieve and that we know, we will achieve.”
Eventually, Pep Guardiola’s side had to fall from their perch. Nothing lasts forever and Manchester City had dominated English football for the past seven years before the 24/25 season. What was seen from City this season was a drop in standards on the pitch as players age, constant injury issues amongst key players, and a loss of team harmony caught up to and cost Pep Guardiola’s side. After spending so long on top of the mountain that was bound to happen eventually. But with Manchester City’s fall, there are lessons to be learned from this season.
The hope is that those lessons can spark Manchester City’s next era of dominance. If they are learned it can quickly sharpen the focus of everyone associated with Manchester City. Whether that’s the City board, Pep Guardiola and his staff, and the City players. They must all learn from the 24/25 season and grow. Listening to Khaldoon Al-Mubarak speak you sense that this will occur at the Etihad.
Manchester City’s summer of change has already begun. Three members of Pep Guardiola’s staff have already left the club. Change has to occur after such a disappointing season. But there is a determination to get back to the top that is driving the imminent change at City. That should carry City into their next era of dominance if they get this summer right.
