The Athletic reports that there have been initial talks between representatives of Xabi Alonso and Real Madrid over replacing Carlo Ancelotti in the summer.

Currently, there is a possibility that Alonso will be in charge at the Bernabeu in the summer, but that depends on the future of Carlo Ancelotti. If the Italian wins the Champions League or LaLiga this season, it is hard to imagine him being sacked in the summer, meaning Alonso would not be in charge.

However, Alonso has long been highlighted as Ancelotti’s successor at Madrid, which is part of the reason he turned down Bayern Munich and Liverpool last year.

Is this the right move for Alonso right now?

As the report mentions, people in Madrid believe Alonso is the best option to replace Ancelotti due to a variety of different factors, most related to his experience as a player. However, what it also mentions is that proving how good you are in Madrid, as a head coach, is completely different.

The question is, is Alonso actually ready for the next step?

There is no doubt in Alonso’s abilities as a head coach considering he has led Leverkusen to their first ever Bundesliga title in an unprecedented unbeaten season, but, this season may have shown that he is not completely ready for the next step, after what his only his second full season in a top league.

The former midfielder’s tactical choices this season have left some question marks over certain results and at one of, if not, the biggest team in the world, this would garner a lot more criticism than at Leverkusen.

On top of this, moving so soon could be a death wish for his reputation if things go drastically wrong at Madrid.
