“Things get a bit distorted” – Julian Alvarez opens up on Manchester City exit and pre-transfer controversy | OneFootball

Julian Alvarez has shone some light on the interviews that took place prior to his move to Atletico Madrid and Manchester City exit intensifying over the summer.

The 24-year-old brought an end to his time at the Etihad Stadium by completing a move to the Spanish capital in August, as part of an agreement between the two clubs that could reach as high as €95 million through potential add-ons.

Alvarez had been weighing up his options throughout the most part of the summer transfer window, particularly whilst competing for Argentina’s youth squad at the Olympic Games in Paris.

As part of that decision making alongside support from his representatives, interviews were issued via post-match press conferences in France that shone some light on his thought process, angering some portions of Manchester City’s online fanbase.

However, in new comments this week, the former Manchester City striker has insisted that nothing was undertaken without full dialogue and transparency with Etihad Stadium officials themselves.

Speaking to ESPN Argentina, Julian Alvarez has opened up on the manner of his City exit, and how he feels as though there was nothing wrong with the way things developed both behind-the-scenes and in public.

“I don’t think my transfer happened in a bad way. I always spoke with complete honesty; what I said at the time might have sounded a bit harsh, but things get amplified on social media, in the media, and it was just what I felt,” Alvarez said.

The striker continued, as translated by All About Argentina, “I simply said I was going to reflect on what had happened and project what could come in the future.

“I said I had a great time at the club, that I was very happy and comfortable. It was just words that were missing to explain things or maybe things get a bit distorted.”

Julian Alvarez closed his stay at Manchester City with back-to-back Premier League titles to his name, and having played a significant role in the club’s historic Treble success of 2022/23, featuring a first UEFA Champions League title.

The second of Alvarez’s two seasons brought about some element of frustration from the player’s side, despite it being his most productive of the two campaigns in front of goal, with more opportunities handed out in attacking midfield than the leading striker role.

Manchester City will feel somewhat comfortable with their options in attack despite Alvarez’s exit for Atletico Madrid, retaining the force of Erling Haaland in the number nine position, and adding Savinho into their wide attacking options.
