The Seagulls have started the calendar year with three consecutive defeats. It is arguably the most difficult run since head coach Vidošić was appointed in the summer.
This evening’s Adobe Women’s FA Cup fourth round tie against second tier Durham provides Brighton & Hove Albion with a chance to bounce back but head coach Vidošić says that his side’s focus has to primarily be on performing well.
“You can sometimes get sidetracked with the result, so I’m always more focused on performance,” Vidošić said when speaking in the pre-match press conference. “We want to perform well throughout all of our phases, everything we do with and without the ball, that’s always the first focus.
“There have been times where we haven’t got the result but played really well. It’s hard then to be too judgemental because football can be funny. Sometimes, you can play the best game of the season and not win and on other occasions, you can have a scrappy performance and win. You have to always take the performance into context rather than the result because it’s not always good.
“This game is about progressing. Of course, we want to win but our full focus is on performance and if we take care of that, we give ourselves a great chance.”
Opponents Durham are challenging strongly for promotion to the Barclays Women’s Super League and Vidošić has respect for the North East side.
He said “They’ve been doing really well and are challenging for promotion. It’s really interesting in the Championship, there are a lot of good teams and they are challenged every week.
“They will be ready but we know their strengths, we’ve reviewed them. We’ve also identified where we can impose ourselves on the game but it’s always interesting. We will see how we both come out, approach the game and everything will become more clear when the referee kicks us off.”
The Adobe Women’s FA Cup is Brighton & Hove Albion’s only real chance of winning silverware this season and Vidošić sees the competition as a good opportunity for his side.
He said “The FA Cup is a prestigious competition and it’s another opportunity for us. It’s the first time we’ve played in it this season and I’m really looking forward to it, the team are as well. We’re at home and it’s all to look forward to.”
Brighton & Hove Albion’s Adobe Women’s FA Cup fourth round tie against Durham takes place at the American Express Elite Football Performance Centre at 7pm. Due to a late venue change, no tickets will be available to purchase this evening.
