Thomas Tuchel is in ‘pole position’ to become the next England manager after the Football Association reportedly held talks with his representatives.

The FA have been searching for a new head coach since Gareth Southgate stepped down following defeat to Spain in the Euro 2024 final.

Lee Carsley, who was placed in interim charge of the Three Lions for the Uefa Nations League campaign, had been considered the favourite for the job by the bookmakers, but is not in consideration for the role on a permanent basis.

Reports emerged this week that the FA had not made a formal approach to any of the leading candidates, which included Manchester City boss Pep Guardiola, Newcastle United manager Eddie Howe, Jurgen Klopp and Graham Potter.

However, it now seems that they have ‘accelerated their search’ for Southgate’s successor this week, with Sky Sports claiming that Tuchel is their ‘primary choice’.

It had been claimed that Guardiola was the FA’s ‘dream long-term candidate’ and had made an ‘initial enquiry’ in July, but he is not currently an ‘active candidate’ to take over the England team. The Catalan’s contract with Man City runs out next summer.

The latest report claims that former Chelsea and Bayern Munich boss Tuchel could be confirmed as the next manager in short order “if negotiations progress well”, although the terms of his contract still need to be agreed.

The German has been out of work since being let go by Bayern at the end of last season.
