Blues have navigated plenty of tricky assignments this season, and after facing off against Wrexham in a 1-1 draw in North Wales in front of the Sky Sports cameras last Thursday, Chris Davies' side were able to edge out the fourth-place Terriers at the John Smith's Stadium on Tuesday night, through a piece of individual brilliance from Keshi Anderson.

It looked as if all other results had fallen in favour of the West Midlands outfit, as the aforementioned Wrexham were defeated 3-2 by Stevenage at the Stok Cae Ras, whilst Wycombe Wanderers were able to maintain a two-point deficit between themselves and Birmingham after a dramatic 2-1 success over Barnsley at Adams' Park.

However, this latest statement result for Blues makes it 16 games unbeaten in all competitions, and the players' efforts weren't lost on Brady, who took to social media following the full-time whistle.

The 1-0 success in West Yorkshire has taken Birmingham to the 60-point mark after just 26 League One encounters, having a two-point gap to the Chairboys, whilst Wrexham's third defeat in five games has opened up an eight-point buffer between Blues and the Red Dragons.

Over the course of the season, the B9 outfit's game-management has been key to accumulating so many points against their promotion rivals, having taken 13 points off Wycombe, Wrexham and Huddersfield thus far, and that element was once again on show in an edgy encounter between themselves and Michael Duff's side.

Anderson's sublime volley on 49 minutes, which has rightfully been described as a 'Goal of the Season' contender by some, was one of just three shots on target between the two sides, but those of a Royal Blue persuasion - including Brady - were left feeling joyous once again in the end.

Blues' official X account posted a short summary of "The work rate. The passion. The finishing. THIS team right now," highlighting the various aspects on show in recent weeks by Davies' men, to which Brady quote-tweeted and stated "HUGE win today boys"

The result was slightly overshadowed by a late challenge on Tomoki Iwata - who made his first start in three games after returning from an injury sustained - by Huddersfield captain Jonathan Hogg, with the Blues boss left to hope the Japanese midfielder's latest issue isn't as serious, as he was forced off on 79 minutes.

Birmingham City take another step closer to promotion

Despite the significant pressure which has been heaped on the club after their spending spree and ambition following a first drop into the third tier since 1995, the crop of players at St Andrew's @ Knighthead Park have continuously risen to the occasion, and this midweek success could be one of the most crucial victories if a first-time promotion back to the Championship is to be secured.

Post-match, Davies stated that the trip to the Terriers was "a good marker to see how far we’ve come," as Town's 16-match unbeaten run - which began after defeat to Blues in October - had only just been ended by Bolton Wanderers last Saturday.

After cementing an eight-point difference between themselves and Wrexham in third, Birmingham are also set to play multiple matches in hand in the weeks to come.

Home ties against Cambridge United, Leyton Orient and Stevenage have all been pushed back to this side of the New Year after international postponements, whilst their clash with Peterborough United at London Road will also be moved as a result of the FA Cup clash with Newcastle United in a week-and-a-half's time.

Further depth has also been added into the creative ranks through the loan signing of Kieran Dowell from Rangers, with many now expecting the title favourites to secure their immediate return to the second tier in the weeks to come.

Unsurprisingly, Davies has already urged his side to avoid complacency in their final 20 league encounters, with the first of those coming against Rotherham United on home turf this weekend.
