Poland’s 3-1 defeat to France in the Round of 16 of the FIFA World Cup has knocked them out of the tournament, as an inspired Kylian Mbappe show helped Les Bleus.
Poland’s tournament was a rather dour one stylistically and if not for Wojciech Szczesny, they may never have gone through to the next round. With that in mind, we look at their top three players in the World Cup.
Wojciech Szczesny
Without a doubt, Szczesny was Poland’s best player in the tournament and probably the best goalkeeper in the World Cup as well. His double save against Saudi Arabia and his save against Lionel Messi against Argentina meant that Poland remained in contention to qualify for the knockout stages but they can rely on a goalkeeper only for a limited amount of time.
Grzegorz Krychowiak
Playing regularly at the base of the midfield, Krychowiak was expected to have a vital role to play for the Poles and he did quite well – especially from a defensive perspective. The defender midfielder made 2.3 interceptions per game and won 1.3 tackles per game as well, while looking quite comfortable in possession as well.
Robert Lewandowski
While Lewandowski didn’t always play well for the Poles, he scored the vital goals when it truly mattered. His best performance probably came against Saudi Arabia as he got into the right positions and hit the post twice in a game that Poland just had to win. For someone who was playing in a more conservative system than what he is used to, expecting more from Lewandowski would be unrealistic.
