Lucas Bergvall has responded to Pep Guardiola describing him as “unstoppable” in Tottenham’s midfield.
The 19-year-old has made 38 appearances in all competition for Spurs this season, benefitting from the club’s injury problems and making eight Premier League starts so far in his first campaign at the club.
Bergvall played the full 90 minutes last month as Spurs were narrowly beaten 1-0 by Manchester City, and he caught the eye of Guardiola.
However, while the Swedish midfielder said the City boss’ comments were “fun”, he played down the significant of receiving the compliments.
“Of course it’s fun, but in the big picture it doesn’t really matter,” Bergvall told SVT Sport.
“I just try to play football and develop all the time and help the team. It’s always fun to get praise and you should take it in. But I try not to put too much emphasis on it.”
Bergvall had the chance to join Barcelona last year, and admitted it was “not very easy to say no” to Spanish club.
However, he did so and has had a key role to play for Ange Postecoglou’s side this season, scoring his first goal for the club in the first-leg victory over Liverpool in the semi-finals of the Carabao Cup.
Speaking after City’s win in north London, Guardiola was full of praise for the Spurs squad, and particularly the display of their teenager in midfield.
Guardiola said: “Bergvall, every time he has the ball and runs, he’s unstoppable.
“Spence, Pedro Porro, Udogie, Kulusevski, Son. It’s an incredible physical team with a clear idea to play, and they play really good.”
