Tottenham vs AZ predicted XIs

  • Tottenham: Vicario; Porro, Dragusin, Davies, Gray; Bergvall, Bentancur, Sarr; Moore, Richarlison, Werner
  • AZ: Owusu-Oduro, Maikuma, Penetra, Dekker, Wolfe; Clasie, Mijnans, Koopmeiners; Buurmeester, Parrott, Van Bommel

Team news:

Having served a suspension against Ferencvaros for his eighth-minute red card in Spurs’ opener, Dragusin is back for the hosts and should partner Ben Davies in defence.

However, at least one of the back four which started against West Ham will have to play against AZ as Djed Spence is out, meaning Pedro Porro is likely to keep his place at right-back.

Wilson Odobert is also absent, but the likes of Timo Werner, Richarlison and Rodrigo Bentancur will all be hoping to start and earn some valuable minutes.

As for Alkmaar, Bruno Martins Indi, Mexx Merdink and Wouter Goes are certain absentees, while Ghana international Ibrahim Sadiq is a doubt.

Former Spurs forward Parrott looks set to start in the centre of a front three which also includes Dutch legend Mark van Bommel’s son, Ruben.

Any pressure that had begun to build on Ange Postecoglou following Spurs’ defeat at Brighton – Tottenham threw away a two-goal lead to lose 3-2 – was quickly alleviated as he masterminded a 4-1 rout of London rivals West Ham on Saturday.

The Lilywhites fought back from a goal down to force a capitulation rather than be victims of one for a change and confidence will be high ahead of this clash with Alkmaar as a result.

One key talking point from the win over West Ham was the half-time substitution of James Maddison for Pape Matar Sarr. The English midfielder had looked lively in the first period yet Postecoglou made the bold call to withdraw him.

The Australian was soon vindicated, however, as Spurs netted three quick-fire goals to roar into the lead and it will be intriguing to see how many minutes Maddison gets against AZ, as it will indicate whether he is likely to start against Crystal Palace this Sunday.

Confidence will be low at AZ following a fourth consecutive loss – their worst run for 22 years – on Saturday, but one player in the Alkmaar camp who may be relishing this fixture is Troy Parrott.

The Irish forward spent seven years with Spurs before leaving permanently in the summer, and he will be keen to make a positive impact against his former employers.
