Tottenham Hotspur suffered a shock slump that left the North London outfit in 15th place on the Premier League log.
While many called for chairman Daniel Levy to dismiss manager Ange Postecoglou, others understood that Spurs had been decimated by injuries that handicapped their performances.
Tottenham were without as many as 14 players at a point this season. Those absences were particularly felt in defence, with the first-choice centre-half pairing of Cristian Romero and Micky van de Ven sidelined for a chunk of the campaign.
Spurs had to use midfielder Archie Gray in the rearguard. The arrival of Kevin Danso in January eased concerns, but it is clear the Lilywhites need reinforcement at the back.
Tottenham fans will be hoping the club can add another top central defender for good measure, considering how injury-prone Romero and Van de Ven are. And there might be good news for them.
According to the Daily Mail, Tottenham want to sign highly rated AFC Bournemouth talent Dean Huijsen. It has been widely mooted that he has a £50 million release clause in his contract with the Cherries.
Tottenham could use a player of Huijsen’s ilk. The 19-year-old is a calm and composed operator who reads danger brilliantly. The 6ft5ins centre-half is built for physical duels and will only get better at them as he fills out his frame. He is just as assured on the ball, distributing with authority.
Also, Huijsen plays for Bournemouth, a team with a similar tactical set-up to Spurs, so settling into North London will be easy for the defender tipped by Daniele De Rossi to become one of the best players in the world during his time at AS Roma.
He has world-class potential and can adeptly cover for Romero and Van de Ven when the Tottenham stars spend time on the treatment table. Spurs know all about his quality, he bagged the only goal as Bournemouth beat Tottenham in December.
Tottenham will face stiff competition for Huijsen’s signature. Newcastle United and Chelsea are keen on securing the young defender, while Real Madrid have also been linked with a move.
If Spurs are serious about strengthening their defence for the long term, they must act decisively. A player of Huijsen’s quality won’t be available for long, and if Tottenham hesitate, they risk losing out to their rivals. Postecoglou’s side must show ambition and fight to secure the talent they desperately need.
