Christian Eriksen is among four Manchester United players seeing out their final four months at Old Trafford.

Indeed, it’s been common knowledge for several months now that the club would opt against extending his stay beyond the three years he’ll have spent in Manchester come this summer.

The seasoned veteran, who turns 33 on Friday, played an integral role throughout his maiden campaign under Erik ten Hag, making 37 starts in all competitions – despite missing two months of the term sidelined with an ankle injury.

However, the breakthrough of Kobbie Mainoo in the subsequent season saw Eriksen’s game time heavily reduced to the point where he was granted only 14 starts across the board and a further 14 off the bench.

After watching Eriksen and Casemiro partnered together for Ruben Amorim’s maiden game in the dugout, Alan Shearer claimed it’d be ‘nigh on impossible’ for the ageing duo to meet the demands of the new system implemented by the head coach, and it’s since been further proven in their significant lack of minutes since he took the reins.

Alas, another Premier League switch seems out of the realm of possibility for the Dane at this stage of his career. Instead, he’s been tipped to go back to where it all began: Ajax. He joined the Eredivisie outfit in 2008 before making his senior bow two years later, with his stellar performances eventually catching the eye of Tottenham Hotspur chiefs.

Peter Schmeichel weighed in on the out-of-favour Red’s situation when speaking to Voetbal Primeur, saying: “That [move to Ajax] would be a great step for him. Of course, as we know, he is a midfielder. Nowadays, in the Premier League, you need players who can sprint up and down for 90 minutes.

“The way Ruben Amorim wants to play also doesn’t suit him. He wants to win the ball back quickly at a very high pace. That’s not in his nature. Unfortunately, Eriksen no longer has that energy.

“He’s a great player. Some of the things he does on the field [are questionable]. He’s still so good on the ball and technically. I think Ajax would be a fantastic move for him.”
