Hakan Calhanoglu admits that losing to AC Milan in the derby “hurt” Inter Milan, says the team want to prove “who we really are” against Roma.

Calhanoglu spoke to Italian broadcaster DAZN, via FCInterNews, ahead of this afternoon’s match against the Giallorossi.

Inter Milan lost to AC Milan in the Coppa Italia semifinal second leg on Wednesday.

And it was not just any loss for the Nerazzurri.

First of all, defeats against Milan in the derby are always particularly painful ones.

Then there was the fact that Inter had also lost their previous match. They fell to a 1-0 defeat against Bologna last Sunday.

And maybe worst of all, Inter lost in truly emphatic fashion.

The Rossoneri beat Inter 3-0 in the end. After a bright opening half hour from the Nerazzurri, they looked completely out of gas in the second leg.

Inter midfielder Hakan Calhanoglu used to be an AC Milan player, and so matches against Milan are always particularly significant for the Turkish international.

And Calhanoglu admitted that “anything can happen in football.”

“Wednesday’s loss hurts,” he continued. “But we have to accept it.”

“Because we’ve always reacted well to losses.”

“Today we can show who we really are,” Calhanoglu insisted.

“We need more determination. And we have to have the courage to take risks to make errors.”

“We have to risk more, and not be afraid of making mistakes,” said the 31-year-old. “And have the right attitude.”

Meanwhile, Calhanoglu also gave his thoughts to InterTV, via FCInterNews.

“We know that Roma are a dangerous team,” he said. “They have an experienced coach who knows how to manage the team.”

“However, we’e always reacted well to losses as a team. Because we have the right mentality.”

Hakan Calhanoglu stated that “we have the right mentality.”

“We help each other out. We have to get out of this situation.”

“We need the fans behind us, and to patiently play our game.”

And Calhanoglu further said of the in-form Roma that “they play vertically, and when they lose the ball they defend as a team.”

“They all get back to defend their goal. However, we have some ideas on how to hurt them, and we all have to go for it.”
