Liverpool defender Jarell Quansah and Bournemouth teenager Dean Huijsen are on Newcastle’s shortlist for centre-back signings ahead of the summer transfer window.
Eddie Howe has made reinforcing his backline a focus ahead of the summer. Sven Botman has been eased back into action after an ACL injury, while both Fabian Schar and Dan Burn will be 33 at the end of the current campaign.
Newcastle failed in a bid to sign Marc Guehi from Crystal Palace last summer and remain intent on signing a central defender. According to The Times, the Magpies are taking a keen interest in two Premier League youngsters.
Liverpool’s Jarell Quansah is a player admired at St James’ Park. The 22-year-old broke into the Liverpool side last season but has struggled for a regular role this time around, starting just twice in the Premier League.
However, Quansah is viewed as a player of big potential and was included in the England squad for March’s international fixtures. He’s yet to debut for the senior side but has made eight appearances at u-21 level. Newcastle also showed interest in Quansah’s Liverpool teammate, Joe Gomez, last summer.
Newcastle are also admirers of Bournemouth’s Huijsen. The 19-year-old has enjoyed an outstanding debut season with the Cherries, after arriving from Juventus. Each of England’s top clubs are tracking the progress of the Spanish centre-back, who made his senior international debut this month.
Huijsen has a release clause of £50m in his contract on the south coast, though is understood to favour a move to Spain. Real Madrid are weighing up a summer deal and Fabrizio Romano is reporting that Newcastle ‘feel it will be difficult to get deal done’.
