Tyrone Mings set to miss months of action for Aston Villa after knee injury | OneFootball

Aston Villa have announced that Tyrone Mings will require surgery after suffering a knee injury during their Premier League clash with Newcastle United on Saturday.

The England international was stretchered off in the first half. Medics put his right leg in a protective boot, and he received a standing ovation from supporters as he left the pitch.

The centre-back will undergo surgery and undertake a lengthy rehabilitation process. The 30-year-old could be out for around six months.

Mings will be a massive miss for manager Unai Emery, who has been reliant on the defender.

The defender has been a mainstay in Emery’s first team since the Spaniard arrived last year.

His absence has already impacted Villa as they capitulated against Newcastle after Mings went off.

Pau Torres made his Premier League debut as Mings’ replacement, but things went wrong for the £33 million signing from Villarreal.

Torres looked unassured and was not ready to be thrown into the thick of things.

Newcastle were 2-1 ahead when Mings went off in the 31st minute but rattled home three unanswered goals to complete a dismal day for Villa.

Emery will return to the drawing board after the loss and hope for a better showing when they host Sean Dyche’s Everton on Sunday.

The manager might also contemplate entering the market for short-term defensive reinforcements after the Mings injury.

Villa have only signed Torres, Youri Tielemans and Moussa Diaby this summer. There is room for a short-term addition to deputise for Mings.
