Sheffield Wednesday have been linked with Huddersfield Town midfielder Duane Holmes ahead of the January transfer window.

That’s according to a report from The Sun, which claims that the 28-year-old could be set to leave the Championship club in the first month of 2023.

Wednesday and Derby County are both said to be keen to lure him to League One but it remains to be seen whether Holmes wants to step down a division.

The midfielder was a regular fixture in Huddersfield’s run to the play-off final last season and has featured 20 times this term – not missing a single Championship game in 2022/23 despite the change of head coach.

It seems Holmes would be well received at Hillsborough as FLW’s Wednesday fan pundit Callum Maxted has indicated he believes it could be a smart bit of business.

He said: “I don’t really know much about Duane Holmes but I have heard he’s an attack-minded midfielder and I think that could be something we look at to share the workload with [Barry] Bannan and [George] Byers.

“I think it’s the type of signing that Darren Moore would look for. He wants to keep the competition fresh and he wants to help us in attacking areas as much as he can so a signing like that would be very, very positive for the club.

“He has played loads and loads of games in the Championship as well so he brings a wealth of experience with him.”

He added: “Maybe we could see him come through the door but there are also other areas we need to look at, such as the defence.

“We have got five midfielders that can play in any of the three positions in the formations that we play but I think it’s what we need really.

“We need someone that can push the team up the pitch and create stuff for the strikers because at the minute Bannan is the only one that does that.

“If we’re sharing the workload then we need someone like that.”

Holmes’ contract at the John Smith’s Stadium runs until 2024, with the option of a further year, so it looks as though the Owls will have to pay a fee to prize him away.
