Marking 50 years of diplomatic relations between Vietnam and Germany

Germany and Vietnam have maintained diplomatic relations for over 50 years. SV Werder Bremen are also involved in various projects in Vietnam, having organised several trips to the country over the last months. Most recently, the Green-Whites took part in their third delegation trip to Vietnam in November 2024.

SV Werder were able to welcome Vietnam’s ambassador to Germany, Vu Quang Minh, to the Weserstadion for the game against TSG Hoffenheim on 16th February. Also accompanying the ambassador was Dang Hoang Linh, consul for politics and economics. Klaus Filbry, chairman of the SVW executive board, was able to meet with the two and discuss the ongoing partnership, as well as future activities.

The visit marked the start of the events planned by the club to mark the 50th anniversary of diplomatic relations between the two countries. Further activities, including the continuation of the Football Development Programme and further trips to Vietnam, during which various community events at local schools and social organisations will be held, are also scheduled to take place during the course of the year. The schedule of events will culminate in a delegation trip led by the city of Bremen, which will likely take place in the final quarter of the year and which Werder will also participate in.

In addition to Filbry, Ambassador Minh also met with Werder captain Marco Friedl in the players’ tunnel, as well as club legends Tim Borowski and Ailton. The ambassador spoke positively of his visit to the Weserstadion, saying “On behalf of the people of Vietnam, I would like to thank SV Werder for their engagement in Vietnam. We are very grateful for what the club does for our people and know not to take this for granted. I would be delighted to be able to help support future events. Working directly with the community helps foster trust amongst the people in Vietnam.”

At the conclusion of his visit, the ambassador extended an official invitation to both Filby and Dominik Kupilas, head of fan & business development at the club, to visit the Vietnamese embassy in Berlin in March.
