Journalist Antonio Vitiello believes that there are no signs of positive changes being made at AC Milan despite all of the media speculation.

Milan came into the 2024-25 season with the self-declared objective of fighting for the Scudetto under Paulo Fonseca, but the fact he was sacked in December said a lot about the way things were going. Sergio Conceicao replaced him, and failed to engineer a surge up the league.

The Rossoneri sit ninth in the table despite a positive recent run, while they were dumped out of the Champions League by Feyenoord and won’t be back to compete in it again next season. Thus, there is talk of a summer revolution, with a new sporting director and coach.

Vitiello published his weekly column on MilanNews after the win over Genoa last night, and despite a fourth victory in five games he painted a rather grim picture regarding the outlook for 2025-26 and beyond.

“The victory in Genoa, obtained with yet another comeback under Conceiçao, has not moved Milan’s position in the table one iota, remaining ninth in the standings. Think about this: the Diavolo have won three of the last four league games and continues to be ninth in the standings. This explains how badly the Milan team has done in the previous weeks.

“It’s really painful to see the Rossoneri in this limbo, a team that has had absolutely nothing to say in the league for two months now. Milan might not even play in Serie A anymore, they have no more objectives, and we have to thank the club’s top brass for this depressing end to the league season.

“We’re talking about managers who at the beginning of the season were full of slogans: ‘The future is bright as long as I’m here. Now let’s write history’, Zlatan said in the conference at the beginning of the year.

“Directors who indicated the Scudetto as the seasonal objective for the club, but who have now disappeared from the radar, without providing an explanation for this horrible situation in the league season.

“Ibra and Furlani have not appeared in front of the cameras for five games, even in Genoa not even present at the stadium. Maybe they will reappear with triumphal declarations in Rome if Milan were to win the Coppa Italia final against Bologna.

“Yesterday I read the words of Arrigo Sacchi on CalcioBox, another jab at the management of Milan, but absolutely correct. ‘When you start with a club that has no history, vision, competence and style, it is very likely that problems will arise. These aspects come before the team. The club is the base. If these elements are missing, then difficulties are inevitable’, said the former Rossoneri coach.

“There is little to add, Milan’s weak point is at the top, there is no chain of command worthy of one of the most famous and glorious clubs in the world. Seeing Milan reduced to vegetating in ninth place in Serie A really hurts.

“The depressing thing is that there are no signs of change. Maybe a new sports director comes in, but the structure remains the same. A new sporting director who will not even have the freedom to act as he sees fit, but will always have to deal with the current directors.

“The same ones who were the main architects of Milan’s ninth place, of the exit in the Champions League playoffs after 120 million euros invested in the market, money practically thrown away.

“All that remains is the Coppa Italia, a shortcut to enter the Europa League, but the season remains negative, because Milan cannot be ninth in the standings and make a fool of themselves in the Champions League against teams that are clearly inferior.”
