Blues will be hoping to face off against their bitter rivals on a regular basis in the years to come
Aston Villa supporters were quick to fire digs at their cross-city rivals Birmingham City after their promotion back to the Championship was sealed on Tuesday night.
Just 24 hours after Blues had secured an immediate promotion back to the second tier by defeating Peterborough United 2-1 at the Weston Homes Stadium, Villa were facing off against a formidable PSG side in the first leg of the UEFA Champions League quarter-finals at the Parc des Princes.
Whilst the encounter in the first place was a sign of how far the Villans have progressed in such a short period of time, with it coming six years to the day of a pivotal 2-1 victory over Rotherham United in their promotion-winning season under Dean Smith, Unai Emery's side were defeated 3-1 in the French capital as three spectacular goals from Désiré Doué, Khvicha Kvaratskhelia and Nuno Mendes cancelled out Morgan Rogers' opener on 35 minutes.
However, with thousands of supporters descending on Paris ahead of the encounter, as has become the norm throughout a remarkable campaign of their own, those of a claret and blue persuasion were in no rush to try and downplay the achievements of Chris Davies' men, who had immediately wiped out the biggest divisional gap between the Second City rivals since the mid 1990s.
Regardless of the fact it has now been over six years since the last derby between Villa and Blues, the rivalry has, and in truth, never will diminish between two of the country's most passionate fanbases.
Throughout the season, Bluenoses have aimed their fair share of digs towards the Premier League high-flyers, whilst also having to face chants from supporters of fellow League One sides, reminding them of the success being enjoyed at Villa Park in comparison to St Andrew's @ Knighthead Park.
With 4,000 Bluenoses partying into the night in Cambridgeshire alongside Davies and his record-breaking squad - who could still better a third-tier record for the highest number of wins in a season with the current tally of 32 set by Villa back in 1972 - word had spread across supporters in Paris, with a video courtesy of We Are Villans on Instagram showing a chant which was immediately sung by masses in one particular bar.
"Have you ever seen a Bluenose in Paris? Have you ever seen a Bluenose in Paris? Have you ever seen a Bluenose, ever seen a Bluenose, ever seen a Bluenose in Paris? Have you ****," was the dig aimed at those in B9 on this particular occasion.
Tuesday's promotion was the first major tick in the box when it comes to Tom Wagner and Knighthead's rebuilding job with Blues, with the American owner hoping to see the club back in the Premier League in the next year.
This also comes at a time when plans for a 60,000-seater stadium have been mooted at a £2-3bn cost, whilst Nassef Sawiris and Wes Edens also have plans to extend Villa Park's current capacity to above 50,000 in time for the UEFA European Championship in the UK and Ireland in 2028, with Villa stalwart Tyrone Mings recently elected onto the tournament's board of directors.
There hasn't been a top-flight Second City Derby since January 2011, which ended in a 1-1 draw at St Andrew's, although you have to stretch back to March 20th 2005 for Birmingham's last success in the fixture, which ended 2-0 thanks to goals from future Villa striker, Emile Heskey and Julian Gray.
The future looks promising for both clubs in this part of the world. But, at least in the short-term, those in B6 have made their feelings known once again as to who they believe currently rules the roost in Brum.
