Preston North End's run of form since December has managed to take them away from immediate relegation trouble, and like most previous seasons, they currently reside in the middle reaches of the Championship standings.

Having started the season in dreadful form with just three wins from their opening 19 games, it seemed that PNE might be facing a battle at the bottom of the table. However, in the past 11 fixtures, they have turned it around and have secured five wins and three draws to take them to 37 points after 30 games.

Undoubtedly, they still have a battle ahead, and fans will be hoping the season remains competitive for as long as possible, allowing them to push towards what is shaping up to be a very open play-off race.

If not, they will head into the summer with an opportunity to reset, giving Paul Heckingbottom the chance to make his first significant changes in the transfer window as head coach.

Of course, the transfer window also brings its challenges, with wealthier clubs likely to have their eyes on some of Preston's standout players.

Mads Frøkjær pinpointed as potential Preston North End player of interest for other clubs this summer

To get a Deepdale point of view on what player is most likely to be targeted in the current squad, Football League World spoke to their resident PNE fan pundit, Darren Watson, who predicted that Mads Frøkjær will be a name on a number of shortlists.

"The one player I expect to attract the most attention in the summer is Mads Frøkjær," said Watson.

"He is our standout player. He always puts in a great performance when he plays, he is everywhere on the pitch, he wants to receive the ball, and he wants to give the ball to other players.

"I think someone could come in with quite a lucrative deal, which could put us in a position where we might have to sell because of the money they offer.

"His value is only going to go up. He is consistently in the Preston side and is still young, which is another bonus for his price.

"He is a good player, and I could see a few clubs coming for him - maybe top-end Championship or even some Premier League clubs. He is that good."

Mads Frøkjær has been a steal for Preston North End since his 2023 arrival

Signed for a fee of around £1.2 million from Odense in Denmark in 2023, Frøkjær has been a brilliant addition to North End's ranks, and while it took time for him to get up to speed this campaign, he is now reaping the rewards.

Last year, the attacking midfielder produced eight assists and three goals in 41 appearances and proved to be a real threat for PNE in the final third in his debut campaign in England.

While he may not match last season’s numbers, he remains a key figure in Heckingbottom's setup this season since his appointment.

The Dane excels in recoveries and winning possession high up the pitch for fellow Championship attacking midfielders, and although his chance creation could improve (despite notching eight assists last season), at just 25 years old, he has plenty of time to refine that aspect of his game.

With his contract expiring in 2027, Preston still hold the keys to his future with two-and-a-half years to go on that deal, and if clubs do arrive in the summer, they can demand multiple millions for the midfielder's services.
