Tottenham manager Ange Postecoglou says Spurs would be “playing with fire” if they do not sign another player this January.
Tottenham’s injury crisis has been well documented this season, with Postecoglou having only 13 fit senior players in the Europa League win over Hoffenheim.
Spurs’ already significant injury problems were added to by an injury sustained by striker Dominic Solanke, who has been confirmed as out for six weeks.
They have so far brought in goalkeeper Antonin Kinsky from Slavia Prague this month and have been linked with a move for another forward too, though Postecoglou revealed ahead of the game against Leicester that no new signings were imminent.
The Tottenham boss also admitted recently that the club might not sign anyone else this window but he says failing to do so would be a big risk for the club.
Asked whether he’s been told if the club have money to spend, he clarified that it is not his role to get involved in such things.
“Don’t ask those questions,” he responded. “I’ve got to manage this team and get them ready. We got back at 2am last night. I’m not out there trying to find opportunities for the club, that’s not my role.
“There isn’t the time to do it. I have daily communication with Johan (Johan Lange, sporting director). He’s trying everything he possibly can to get the help we need. This playing group needs help. We’re playing with fire by not bringing anyone in.”
Despite the injury crisis at the club, Postecoglou has been impressed by the efforts of his players, adding: “The players have had to band together and have not made any excuses. They’re fronting up and doing the best they can for their club.
“And I think they all sense an opportunity. We’re deep in one competition, in the knockout stages of another. We’re further along in the FA Cup. It’s not like it’s just the league.”
