The Black Cats have had a positive season under Regis Le Bris, with the side nailed on for a fourth-placed finish come May.

That will bring a play-off place, and Sunderland will also have the added bonus of playing the second leg at the Stadium of Light.

Wes Brown discusses Sunderland’s promotion chances

So, there is a chance of promotion for Sunderland, but it will be a tough task for the Wearside outfit to get through those high pressure games.

And, speaking to AOS, as quoted by Chronicle Live, former player Brown opened up on how difficult the play-offs can be, as he explained why promotion would mean so much to Sunderland.

It would be massive if Sunderland were promoted back into the Premier League. I think it’d be huge for the fans, who are absolutely brilliant and turn up to the games week-in, week-out. There’s nothing better for them than getting back into the Premier League, going up against the biggest teams in England, and having at least two derbies against Newcastle in a season.

I really hope they do it, but those play-off games at Wembley are scary. It all comes down to which team turns up on the day. While I back them to get through the play-offs, sometimes it’s a complete coinflip; crazy things can happen in these kinds of games.

They’ve done really well this season, but it feels like they get to this stage often and don’t get the job done. Hopefully, this time around they can get it done.”

Sunderland must cope with play-off expectancy

Unlike other clubs, it has been apparent for some time that Sunderland were going to finish in the league, so there has been little jeopardy to their games.

As a result, there has been a countdown to the play-offs, and it has been difficult for them to build momentum.

Some will argue that lack of intensity could impact them when the play-offs come around, whilst others will say it has allowed Le Bris to manage his squad to ensure they’re ready.

Yet, as Brown says, those games are tense, and it ultimately comes down to who can deliver on the day.
