There’s not much time left in the winter transfer window for Graham Potter and the West Ham board to execute any transfer business, but one deal that has been done concerns a left winger with 99 goal or assist contributions.

Barcelona’s Ansu Fati is ready to move to West Ham, and Ben Chilwell could join the Irons before the deadline to set up a reunion with his former Chelsea manager.

One player that won’t be pulling on the claret and blue for the remainder of the 2024/25 season, however, is Maxwel Cornet.

Graham Potter won’t be able to call upon Maxwel Cornet

According to reliable journalist, Fabrizio Romano, the Hammers have agreed a deal with Genoa for the Serie A outfit to take the Ivorian on loan.

Though he would appear to have an impressive 99 G/A contributions in his career tally of 350 appearances to date (transfermarkt), he only managed one Premier League goal and six assists in all competitions in his 38 appearances for the Hammers.

Genoa to offer Cornet a lifeline; Graham Potter to continue West Ham squad development

Genoa manager, Patrick Vieira, clearly sees something in the left winger that he can work with, and were Cornet to do well, it’s entirely possible that something more permanent may result.

What the move does do is keep the player off of the Hammers wage bill and away from a first team set-up that he realistically has no chance of getting into.

Loaned to the Premier League’s bottom club, Southampton, at the start of the current campaign, he couldn’t even make an impression there.

Transfermarkt detail that he made just four appearances which totalled a paltry 187 minutes.

Clearly, the player will be grateful of the new opportunity, whilst West Ham don’t need to worry about what happens next – Cornet has a contract with them until 2027 – for the next six months.
