The win was just West Ham’s fourth since Potter signed

Graham Potter said that West Ham are making steady progress after they ended an eight-match winless run with victory over Manchester United on Sunday.

Goals from Tomas Soucek and Jarrod Bowen secured the 2-0 win, but it was an impressive team performance from the Hammers, who coolly executed their game plan. They were dogged in defence and clinical in attack, weathering a late attacking barrage from Man United to preserve a clean sheet. It was a first League win at Old Trafford for West Ham since 2007.

For Potter, who has now won four of his 17 matches since signing to West Ham, there are clear signs of progress, and he is pleased to have rewarded fans’ patience with a win.

He said: “It’s been a tough couple of months, to be honest.

“We’re a long way from where we want to be, but I think there are signs.

“I think today’s just a nice reward for everybody because sticking together and being connected is not easy when results don’t go your way.

“Winning away at Old Trafford, I don’t think it happens too often for West Ham, so it’s a fantastic day for everybody connected with the Club.”

There have been flash points - Niclas Füllkrug’s rant about his teammates’ mentality after a draw with Southampton stands out - but Potter lauded his players’ professionalism through a tough run.

He continued: “I can’t fault the players.

“The biggest thing I can say to them is it’s not easy when you go on a run like we’ve had and to be connected, to be together, to be fighting for each other, to work every day in the best way, I think it’s a credit to them as professionals.”
