In recent weeks, both Sheffield United and Luton Town have been linked with a move for young Scottish midfielder Max Johnston.

The Daily Record have reported that both sides have had the 18-year-old watched regularly of late whilst performing in the Scottish leagues.

With that in mind, here at FLW, we thought we’d take a look at just who Max Johnston is.

Who is he?

Max Johnston is the son of former Hearts and Rangers player Allan Johnston, who made 22 appearances for the Scottish national team.

Johnston senior also had spells with English clubs Sunderland, Birmingham City, Bolton Wanderers, Middlesbrough and Sheffield Wednesday.

Max Johnston, though, has been at Scottish Premiership side Motherwell since the age of 12, where he came through the Steelmen’s academy.

Johnston, who has also been capped by the Scottish under-19 side, has only made two appearances for the Motherwell first team as of yet, but it is out on loan this season.

That is where he has caught the eye of the Championship clubs, after being loaned to Scottish Championship side Queen of the South last summer, who, at the time, were under the management of his father.

He has gone on to make 23 appearances in the Scottish Championship this season, scoring twice and assisting two goals – predominantly from the right hand side, where he has played mostly at right back, but also right midfield.

Johnston has contributed massively to a side struggling at the bottom of the league in the Scottish second-tier, which has seen him named in the Scottish Professional Football League’s team of the week on two occasions.

He has impressed so much that Motherwell boss Graham Alexander is reported to be planning to give him a chance for the Steelmen in their first team next season.

reported that they will be required to pay a six-figure sum to secure his signature.

This is certainly an interesting one to watch this summer.
