Wim Jonk has stepped down as head coach of FC Volendam to become the technical manager at the club. 31-year-old Matthias Kohler, who was Jonk’s assistant, has taken over as head coach. FC Volendam announced the news via their official social media channels on Friday evening.
Jonk has been the manager of FC Volendam since 2019. In that time he guided the club back to the Eredivisie and helped them solidify their top-flight status for next season. Speaking about his role change at Volendam, Jonk said ‘I asked myself if I wanted to continue in exactly the same role, focusing on the rhythm from game to game and all the details. Or that I should take a little more distance and guard the larger lines. At this point in my career at FC Volendam, after being head coach for four years, the latter feels better to me.’
Volendam finished 14th in the Eredivisie last season following promotion from the Eerste Divisie. Even after experiencing a successful campaign, Jonk has decided to step away from the head coach role. The 56-year-old said ‘The club should not depend on me as a head coach and as a technical manager I can add more to the foundation of the club. This also gives a lot of variety and new energy. We already have an excellent successor in Matthias, he knows exactly how we work, so continuity is guaranteed.’
