Kawasaki Frontale and Tokyo Verdy played out a goalless draw at Uvance Todoroki Stadium on Sunday, as both sides extended their winless runs in the J1 League.
In front of 21,870 spectators, neither team could find the breakthrough despite Frontale creating the better chances with an expected goals tally of 1.20 compared to Verdy's 0.32.
The match was significantly affected by strong winds, with Verdy enjoying more possession in the first half with the elements in their favour, while Frontale struggled to progress the ball against the conditions.
Frontale manager Shigetoshi Hasebe set his team up in their familiar 4-2-3-1 formation, with Louis Yamaguchi in goal behind a back four of Asahi Sasaki, Kota Takai, Yuichi Maruyama and Sota Miura.
Verdy boss Hiroshi Jofuku opted for a 3-4-2-1 system, with Matheus Vidotto protected by a back three of Naoki Hayashi, Kaito Chida and Hiroto Taniguchi, who proved particularly effective.
Despite having seven corners and nine shots in total, Frontale managed just two efforts on target. Verdy, meanwhile, registered only one shot on goal from their five attempts.
The standout performers were predominantly defenders, with Verdy's Chida and Taniguchi both earning 7.9 ratings. Chida was particularly impressive, winning all 11 of his duels and making four interceptions.
For the hosts, Maruyama showed his experience with 14 duels contested and nine won, while Miura won all seven of his duels and made two tackles.
This result does little to improve either side's recent form, with both teams now winless in five league matches. Frontale remain third in the table but will be disappointed not to have capitalised on their home advantage.
"The tight schedule has been challenging," admitted Hasebe, whose side have played seven games in quick succession and now turn their attention to an AFC Champions League Elite quarterfinal against Al Sadd in Saudi Arabia.
Verdy stay 16th and continue to demonstrate resilience despite missing key players, including forward Goki Yamada who is sidelined for eight months with a knee injury.
The J1 League remains incredibly competitive this season, with just four points separating the top 11 teams. Frontale's inability to convert draws into wins could prove costly in their title ambitions, while Verdy will take encouragement from another hard-earned point as they battle to climb away from the relegation zone.
