Leah Williamson says winning the Champions League with Arsenal would be a dream, having grown up as a fan of the north London club.

The England captain has been with Arsenal since 2014, spending her entire senior career with the Gunners – the only English club to have lifted the European trophy, back in 2007.

The 27-year-old defender is determined to see her team bounce back from last week’s frustrating 2-0 defeat in Madrid in the first leg of their Champions League quarter-final.

“It would be incredible [to win the Champions League],” Williamson said. “I’m an Arsenal fan and grew up at this club so that’s the dream.

“I think it’s a dream for everybody and we keep working until that becomes possible and we can make that happen. Tomorrow night is another step in that journey.”

The first leg of the tie was played at Estadio Alfredo di Stefano where the poor quality of the pitch grabbed the headlines, with Arsenal legend Ian Wright calling it a ‘disgrace’.

Despite the criticism about the state of the pitch, Williamson insists the team should have performed better last week and will need to make amends at the Emirates on Wednesday to turn around a two goal deficit.

“I think there was a general feeling that we wasted a potential opportunity,” she added. “The pitch wasn’t at the standard that it needed to be, but two teams were playing on the same pitch.

“I think the anger is more frustration at ourselves because we know what we can do and we didn’t. I think in the game, we were still competitive but we need to score goals, that’s what it comes down.

“We were frustrated but more so at ourselves than anything else because pitch, weather, whatever it is, the standards of Arsenal are higher than they were last week.”
