Swansea City have once again had an inconsistent start to a Championship campaign, and they currently look destined to be in a relegation battle.

Despite a decent first few weeks of the season, the last month has been tough for Luke Williams' side, failing to win any of their previous six matches in the second tier.

It has seen them drop pushing for a play-off place to looking below them at those at the foot of the table in a matter of weeks, and supporters will be hoping for fixes in the upcoming January transfer window.

However, the Swans have not been heavy spenders in the past couple of seasons, and there will be fears that this trend carries on this winter as they look to push themselves away from any danger early on.

Verdict made on Swansea's owners' January motives

Swansea's owners have not covered themselves in glory over the last few years following the club's relegation back to the Championship after nearly a decade in the Premier League, with it often feeling like there is not the ambition there to take the team back to the top flight.

January could be a difficult month for the South Wales side as those around them improve and strengthen, leaving Williams' club behind.

Football League World has asked their Swansea Fan Pundit, James Fleming, if he believes whether the owners will provide backing in the transfer window, something that he cannot see coming.

He told FLW: "I think unfortunately we’re in for a bit of a modest transfer window in January, even though we do really need a lot of investment.

"This squad is weak, it's been poor this season and there's plenty of areas where we need to improve. But with our owners' track record, I really wouldn't be surprised.

"We have lost Paul Watson now, which is great for us, but all it means is potentially that there is someone else pulling the strings, and they might not get the backing that he did to go out and sign players."

James continued: "It’s frustrating because, as I said, there are so many places in this team where there needs to be improvement. We need better wingers, we need better strikers, just depth overall in the whole squad is needed desperately.

"Without the owners' backing, we're going to really struggle to find players cheap in January because clubs will be really reluctant to let any of their star players go during the January transfer window."

Swansea may have to turn to the loan market for help

While we are still a couple of months away from the window opening, plans for January will have already started being made by those high up at the Swansea.com Stadium.

If James' prediction is correct, then the loan market will have to be utilised by Williams in the hope of bringing in some more quality, particularly up front where the Swans are lacking a true outlet.

Players like Ali Al-Hamadi at Ipswich Town will be looking for a temporary move away in the winter as they hope for more game-time elsewhere, and Swansea could offer him the platform to get back to his best after a tough year since moving to the Tractor Boys from AFC Wimbledon.

The Iraq international's minutes have been severely limited after making the switch in January 2024, and a Championship club like the South Wales side may be able to poach him for the rest of the campaign to help them with their fight against relegation.
