Tottenham have suffered their 17th Premier League defeat of the season after losing a six-goal thriller against Wolves.

The result sees Wolves close to within two points of Spurs who will now be looking over their shoulders at the possibility of finishing as low as 17th.

As expected, Ange Postecoglou rang the changes with one eye on next week’s Europa League quarter-final second leg against Eintracht Frankfurt.

Six changes in total with Ben Davies, Archie Gray, Djed Spence, Yves Bissouma, Pape Matar Sarr and Mathys Tel all drafted in as the likes of Micky van de Ven, Lucas Bergvall and Rodrigo Bentancur rested.

Sarr did not do his inclusion justice inside the opening seconds as it was his foul on Jean-Ricner Bellegarde that lead to Wolves breaking the deadlock.

After the resulting free-kick was only half cleared, Rayan Aït-Nouri picked up the rebound and volleyed the ball past Guglielmo Vicario.

There was a VAR check for a possible offside but the goal was allowed to stand, confirming a nightmare start for the visitors which could have got worse moments later but Jorgen Strand Larsen couldn’t make the most of Vicario’s poor pass.

Spurs, to their credit, did improve afterwards with Bissouma testing Jose Sa, Tel seeing a shot deflected in addition to Dominic Solanke and Brennan Johnson firing efforts wide.

However, shortly before the half-time whistle disaster struck again. Completely against the run of play, Wolves doubled their lead when Vicario could only palm the ball straight into Spence and into the open goal.

Just before the hour mark Spurs got themselves back into the game as substitute Bergvall combined with Johnson down the right and Tel was on hand at the back post to score his second Premier League goal in as many games.

Though, Wolves restored their two-goal advantage moments later when Cristian Romero lost track of the ball as he chased it towards his own goal, this allowed Aït-Nouri to nip in and square it for Jørgen Strand Larsen for an easy finish.

Richarlison gave Spurs hope with a close-range finish but another defensive mistake resulted in Matheus Cunha marking his return to action following suspension with the goal that ultimately clinched all three points.

So a 17th Premier League loss for Postecoglou’s side as they head to Germany for their season-defining Europa League clash, whilst Wolves are now 14 points clear of the relegation zone meaning they are all-but safe.
